WEEK 18: Study 1 Corintians 15

This week (December 31 thru January 6), please study 1 Corinthians, Chapter 15.

If you want to read the chapter online, click here. (Free website Biblegateway.Com)

DOWNLOAD: Click here to download the MP3 for 1 Corinthians 15. (Password is "quizpad" without the quotes. Available for only 76 days.)

If you'd like to read a commentary on the chapter, click here. (Free website, Christnotes.org)

Study Tip: For some people, the best way to make the Bible a priority in your life is to put it at the start of every day. Rather than waiting for after homework, dinner, or whatever else you normally put before studying, consider setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier in the morning and spending that time reading thru that week's chapter. This can set the tone for your day, and give you a chance to apply the lessons of the chapter in your daily life.

WEEK 17: Review 1 Corintians 11-14

Remember, there is no practice next Wednesday (or the Wednesday after).

DOWNLOAD: Did you miss the original downloads for these chapters? They are posted here one last time for 7 days. No password required, this time.Study Tip: Do you think you'll receive a board game like Trivial Pursuit or Monopoly for Christmas this year? If so, you may wish to combine your love of the new game with your Quiz Team Study schedule. Take the game and simply modify the rules slightly to add quiz questions to the game. Land on someone else's property in Monopoly? You now have two choices - pay the money, or answer 5 quiz questions. Playing Trivial Pursuit? Make each color correspond to one of the chapters we are studying. Playing basketball on your Xbox/Playstation/Wii? Make every foul lead to both 2 free throws and 2 quiz questions. These are easy ways to add a little more studying to your day, without it having to be "quiet time."

Parents: Remember, review time is where you can be especially helpful to your quizzer. Help them stay motivated, and try to engage them on the material with both quiz and content questions!

REVIEW TIPS: Reference Questions

We are now at the halfway point of the year, and rapidly approaching Midwinter. This is a good time to look back and see how you have done. If you're looking for ways to improve your quizzing, this series will give tips and tricks on how to raise your game and rise in the ranks.

Our first tip: REFERENCE QUESTIONS. We all know that there is an official list of Reference Questions out there. But why would they be useful for review? Well, like Finish the Verse questions, there is only a finite list, so it is possible to catch up on them even at this point in the year. But unlike FTVs, Reference Questions DO NOT require being word-perfect. A good way to review, or to make yourself a valuable part f the team.

REMINDER: Christmas Party is TONIGHT!

We hope to see most or all of you at 6:00 PM tonight at the 502 House. A few quick reminders:
  • It is a potluck, so each family should bring something for the table.
  • Please do not park at the 502 House unless you really need to be close-by. Park in the church parking lot and walk on over.
  • Remember, all Quizzers and Coaches are welcome to bring a $5 - $10 gift for the Yankee Swap. (Family members are not taking part in the game.)
  • Feel free to bring cameras to capture the fun moments, although our resident paparazzi will be on duty
  • The event will likely end about 9 PM
Merry Christmas!

WEEK 16: Review 1 Corintians 5 - 10

This week (December 17 thru December 23), please review 1 Corinthians, Chapters 5 through 10.

Remember, there is no practice next Wednesday (or the Wednesday after).

If you want to read the chapters online, click here. (Free website Biblegateway.Com)

DOWNLOAD: Did you miss the original downloads for these chapters? They are posted here one last time for 7 days. No password required, this time.
Study Tip: So how is review studying different from studying for a new chapter? Answer: Not much. Your brain learns and re-learns pretty much the same way. If you are weak on a chapter, use your usual techniques. But if you are STRONG, there are a few ways you can IMPROVE even further: learn keywords, quiz yourself in question form, and try to recite as much of the chapter as you can at a time, until you know the whole thing. These are ways you can get better and better as the year goes along.

Parents: Remember, review time is where you can be especially helpful to your quizzer. Help them stay motivated, and try to engage them on the material with both quiz and content questions!

Every year some people have NO problem thinking of ideas for presents for the gift game at the Quiz Team Christmas party. ...And every year some people are absolutely stumped. If you need some ideas, here are a few popular ideas from past years.
  • Nerf toys (guns, balls, etc.)
  • Tool sets
  • Bible-themed toys

  • Candy
  • Gift Cards
If the weather should turn nasty, be sure to keep your eyes here on QuizPad.Com for any announcements. We have had to postpone the party before for safety reasons, although there is no indication as of today that this would be an issue this year.

Study Tip: Do you spend all of your time studying alone? For some, that is sufficient to absorb the material and prepare for practice. But for others, it is a whole lot more valuable to study with a friend. Find someone that you can spend an hour or two with each week (family member, fellow quizzer, buddy) and spend time with them on the phone or in person, working on the material. Quiz each other. Challenge each other's understanding of the material. Look for holes in each other's knowledge. You will be surprised to see what a little one-on-one can do for your quizzing expertise.

Please note, the difference between the lower slots on the team and upper spots on the bench are VERY close. There is plenty of time for those below the line to work hard and earn a spot.

WEEK 12: Review 1 Corintians 1 - 4

This week (November 19 thru November 25), please review 1 Corinthians, Chapters 1 through 4.

Remember, there is no practice next Wednesday.

If you want to read the chapters online, click here. (Free website Biblegateway.Com)

DOWNLOAD: Did you miss the original downloads for these chapters? They are posted here one last time for 7 days. No password required, this time.
Study Tip: Reviewing is often harder than your initial studying because the material is no longer new. In fact, some quizzers decide not to study because "I already know it." BAD IDEA! The brain is designed to forget things we do not review or use regularly. Be sure this week to review Chapters 1 thru 4 of 1 Corinthians. If you are looking for a new way to view the book, try to look for how each chapter flows into the next, and the way that Paul tried to relate different arguments and discussions.

Israel displays coins from the destruction of the Temple

One of the least popular of Jesus's sayings were his prophecies about the destruction of the Temple. It was still in place during his crucifixion and Resurrection, but the Temple was destroyed by the Romans about 70 A.D. Now, Israel is displaying coins that survived the destruction and discussing what it tells us about 1st century Jerusalem.
The coins were excavated from an ancient street below the Temple Mount, experts said. Archaeologists had to sift through debris and remove boulders thrown off the Temple Mount during the Roman raid before they found the road and the hoard of coins...

The coins are part of a larger exhibition in Jerusalem's Archaeological Garden, showing a collection of antique coins that have been uncovered over the past three decades.

The exhibition shows not only coins minted in Jerusalem during the rebellion but also European, North African and Persian coins that were found around the holy site from various periods.

"This just shows the international character of the city," Katz said. "It shows the importance of Jerusalem to generations of people ... the importance of Jerusalem never faded away for Jews, Christians and Muslims," she said.

Sometimes using a different part of your brain can cause it to more fully engage, and cause memory to be deeper and more effective. And, of course, be aware that there are a number of passages that are already set to music by Christian artists. Keep an ear out!

Veteran's Day

It is not something we discuss very often, but there are many former Bible Quizzers who are now serving in the military. Today is a good day to remember them and all of those who have served. Thank you, Veterans, for serving and protecting us all.

Malaysian government seizes Bibles over the name of God

What's in a name? When the name is the name of God, there is a lot. The Malaysian government has seized 10,000 Christian Bibles for daring to use the name "Allah" (a generic name for God in many languages related to Arabic) for God.
The Bibles contain the word "Allah," which is banned by the government for use by non-Muslims in an apparent bid to appease Muslims.
Church officials say the word "Allah" has been used for centuries to refer generally to God in both Indonesian and Malaysian languages, which are similar. The Roman Catholic Church is challenging the ban in court.
The government maintains that the Arabic-origin word "Allah" is an Islamic word and its use by Christians and others will upset Muslims.

Study Tip: During the holiday season, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay focused on Quiz Team. Parties, concerts, plays, and the like eat more and more into your daily study time. How do you cope? First, accept the fact that your life will have competing priorities and that sometimes Quiz Team can't be #1. Second, realize that we only HAVE time if we MAKE TIME. Set aside some time every day that you can for studying. Make it the same time, as much as possible, and try to be disciplined. Eventually, study time will become a habit, and something you won't have to work so hard to keep up.

What day is today?

If you answered "Halloween" or "All Hallows Eve", you are not wrong but also not right. Today is also Reformation Day. 492 years ago today, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses up on the door of the Castle Church and kicked off the Protestant Reformation, which eventually lead to the founding of the Evangelical Free Church of America and thus EFCA Bible Quizzing.

Whether you are out enjoying the more secular holiday - perhaps by stopping by Trunk or Treat tonight - take a moment to remember these Protestant Reformers who fought to bring the Bible back to the masses and restore the worldwide preaching of the gospel!
