WEEK 26: Study Colossians 3

This week (February 28 thru March 5), please study Colossians 3.

If you want to read the chapter online, click here. (Free website Biblegateway.Com)

If you want to listen to the chapter online, click here. (Uses the free RealPlayer.)

If you'd like to read a commentary on the chapter, click here. (Free website, BibleGateway.Com)

Study Tip: Tired of reading about complex tricks to improve your studying? Okay, let's keep it simple. How often are you reading the chapter for each week? If you answered LESS than "twice a day", then YOU ARE NOT doing the minimum. Every quizzer should be reading the week's chapter AT LEAST twice a day EVERY DAY. This simple commitment can change you from a useless quizzer to one who makes the difference between a win and loss for your team.

More Christians doing Missions Trips for Vacations

Currently, a number of men from our church - including some Quiz Team parents - are taking vacation time to go on a Missions Trip to Sudan. It turns out this is not unique to Calvary Church, but is a growing trend in Christianity nationwide.
A recent estimate said that 1.6 million American Christians are contributing $6 billion annually in labor in the form of short-term mission trips. In fact, the phenomenon -- which is being called "vacations with a purpose" -- is utilized by ministries nationwide such as Wycliffe Associates, which supports and encourages Bible translators worldwide.

Bruce Smith, president and CEO of Wycliffe Associates, says there are many ways to serve.
Have you considered taking some of your own vacation time in high school, college, or after college to Missions? Consider praying to see if God has this in mind for you.

Church of England faces "Bible Shortage"

It seems almost unimaginable here in the States, but the Church of England is facing a "Bible shortage". It is not that churches can not buy Bibles, but that many Church of England churches have been maintaining low stocks of Bibles in the building, so that visitors/parishioners have no chance to confirm the preaching from he pulpit.
The Church's General Synod has voted to ensure that every visitor to a church should have "easy and unfettered" access to the Word of God.

Opening a debate on the issue at the Synod this week, Tim Cox, from Blackpool, said that many churches failed to make Bibles readily available.

Canon Marilyn McCord Adams, the Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University, said she had grown up the American Bible Belt "on the choruses of Jesus Loves Me! This I Know, For The Bible Tells Me So and The Bible, Yes, That's The Book for Me."

She said Bibles should be in churches so that people in the pews could object to interpretations of it by the "higher ups"...

It was "critically important" that the Bible was in church buildings and available for people to use.
Those of you who were Quizzers last year may remember Acts 17:11: "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." Scripture clearly encourages us to read the Bible in order to check the teachings of our teachers. So, I am glad to see the CoE is looking to fix this problem.

The Bible As Manga?

The Bible has been translated into most of the living (and many of the dead) languages in the world. But even today, Christians are looking for new ways to get across the truths of scripture to people. Consider this case of an artist attempting to bring the Bible to readers of Japanese comics, called Manga.
Mr. Akinsiku says his Son of God is “a samurai stranger who’s come to town, in silhouette,” here to shake things up in a new, much-abridged version of the Bible rooted in manga, the Japanese form of graphic novels.

“We present things in a very brazen way,” said Mr. Akinsiku, who hopes to become an Anglican priest and who is the author of “The Manga Bible: From Genesis to Revelation.” “Christ is a hard guy, seeking revolution and revolt, a tough guy.”
Sounds cool, eh? But you have to be careful when "reinterpretting" God's Word. Consider some more of the article.
His book has been criticized by some manga bloggers as too wordy. Mr. Akinsiku said the exposition gave readers a quick understanding of the Bible. His next project is a manga life of Christ. He has 300 pages to lay it out, which means there will be a lot more action, a lot less talking, something like Clint Eastwood in the Galilee.
We always have to be careful when bringing Christ into our art, that we do not try to mold Jesus into the figure we WANT him to be. We need to show him as the figure he IS.

Study Tip: Have you noticed that some teams have dedicated "experts" in specific kinds of questions? If you are reaching the end of the Quizzing Season and realize that you are too far behind to catch up on all books, why not consider becoming a specialist yourself? Pick a specfic kind of question that you enjoy: multiple parts, situation questions, reference questions, or finish the verse questions. By focussing on a specific kind of question, the volume of material to study is reduced, and the odds of your being the key quizzer goes way up.

Family Bibles as History

At Quiz Team, we focus on the Bible as the Word of God. But, the Bible also has a cultural heritage in America. The Bible has been the center of the home for hundreds of years, and often was the only piece of literature a family would have. As such, it is often used as a spot to track family history. Now, there is a new effort to find the history hidden in old family Bibles.
Dust off those old family Bibles. A statewide effort is working to preserve the family histories stored in them.

"I think genealogy and gardening are the top two hobbies there are," said Charlotte Miller of the Mary Blount Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

The Tennessee State Society of DAR is spearheading the project that will run through June.

Organizers are trying to takes pictures of as many family Bibles as possible to preserve them.

"We had one come in just a short time ago with tin type photos and a complete genealogy. We have others that had been written on the back covers," Miller said. "We've had some that they put sheets in it, because they didn't want to write on the Bible. It's like a history lesson."
The next time you find that old family Bible, take a look inside and see what history may be preserved there. Who knows? You may rediscover some secrets of the past!

Study Tip: Do read through the text of scripture and find at the end that you know barely more than you did at the beginning? Do you envy those who can read it once, and be able to quiz effectively? Different people learn in different ways. Some people can do it by simply reading, others by listening. But you may be a learner who needs to really engage the text. Consider taking notes as you read - note down really interesting sections, questions that the text raises, notable phrases, etc. At the end, you will have applied not only your eyes but all the parts of your brain, and the learning may very well be far more effective. Oh, and don't forget to call, e-mail, or speak to the coaches, your parents, or the pastors to get the answers to those questions you had.
