What day is today?

If you answered "Halloween" or "All Hallows Eve", you are not wrong but also not right. Today is also Reformation Day. 492 years ago today, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses up on the door of the Castle Church and kicked off the Protestant Reformation, which eventually lead to the founding of the Evangelical Free Church of America and thus EFCA Bible Quizzing.

Whether you are out enjoying the more secular holiday - perhaps by stopping by Trunk or Treat tonight - take a moment to remember these Protestant Reformers who fought to bring the Bible back to the masses and restore the worldwide preaching of the gospel!

Study Tip: Are you a morning person or a night owl? Do you find yourself happiest and most focussed early in the day, in the middle of it, or late at night when everyone else had gone to bed? Pay attention to these patterns in yourself, and try to study accordingly. If you are a morning person, consider getting up a half hour earlier and studying before school. If you are a night owl, you may want to make your studying the last thing you do before bed. Knowing your own rhythms can be of great help when trying to put God's word into your mind.

Study Tip: Did you know that memories can be linked to aid in recall? Consider doing your studying to a specific piece of music (without lyrics). Then, when you need to recall the chapter for studying, humming the music may bring back the chapter to mind. Cheerleaders reprimanded for using Bible Verses

We hear a lot about the "separation of church and state" when it comes to the Bible, but this is the first time I have heard of it being applied to cheerleaders. A squad from Georgia was using warrior-themed Bible-verses to encourage their football team, and now has been advised that use of the verses at a public high school is breaking the law... despite the fact that no one was complaining.
The verses were picked for their gridiron-friendly themes of pluck and pep: from I Corinthians ("Be men of courage; be strong"); from Ezra ("We will support you, so take courage and do it"); from Proverbs ("Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed").

There are a handful of non-Christian kids at LFO High, but for years, no one pointed out any church-state separation issues. Until this season...In a statement, Jackson said she wanted the school to be "protected from potential lawsuits" and wanted to head off "community division."

Supt. Denia Reese said Jackson told her the practice was breaking the law "and it needed to be stopped."

Study Tip: Where do you do your Bible Quizzing studying? In our age of Multitasking, it is common for people to try to study with the TV or radio on. Others try to do it in the main thoroughfare of the house, where parents are cleaning, siblings are talking on the phone, and pets are running by. This is not optimal for memory or concentration. Try finding a quiet corner of the house, and do your studying without music or video paying. Focus can make an incredible difference in your memory retention.

Challenge 2010: UNDO

Challenge 2010: UNDOIf you were at the Kickoff, we discussed two of the major events that the Bible Quiz Team takes part in - Midwinter and Districts. But if the team does very well, there is the possibility of an even bigger event. NATIONALS! The EFCA's National Youth Conference comes up every 2 years, and the top two quiz teams from each division of Districts get to compete there. This conference's theme is "Challenge 2010: UNDO" and will be held in Columbus, Ohio.

I have a lot of fun memories of my years as a teen at Challenge Conferences. Be thinking about whether this is something you may like to take part in, if the opportunity presents itself.

Study Tip: Ask yourelf, are you learning SCRIPTURE or QUIZ QUESTIONS? Bible quizzing is certainly a great competition, but our ultimate goal is to really learn the Bible verses we are studying. Be sure as you read through these books, you take the time to make sure you understand what you read. Are there terms you don't understand? Ask your parents, or the coaches. Are there concepts or stories referred that you have not read? Seek them out in the Old Testament! The more you understand what you read, the better you will be able to bring it back later when you need it.
