Study Tip: Are you a morning person or a night owl? Do you find yourself happiest and most focused early in the day, in the middle of it, or late at night when everyone else had gone to bed? Pay attention to these patterns in yourself, and try to study accordingly. If you are a morning person, consider getting up a half hour earlier and studying before school. If you are a night owl, you may want to make your studying the last thing you do before bed. Knowing your own rhythms can be of great help when trying to put God's word into your mind.

The Chilean Miners had the Bible with them

If you've been watching the news, you know the story of the Chilean miners who were trapped under the earth after a cave-in. They were pulled out this past week, and freed after months in a deep dark hole. But what you may NOT have heard is how important the Bible and Bible preachers were to them. The work of evangelical Christian pastors was key to their maintaining morale in the many weeks trapped in the darkness.
Marcelo Leiva, pastor of Vallenar Baptist Church, was called in to provide spiritual counseling at Camp Esperanza (Hope), where the families had gathered and where communication with the miners was ongoing.

Leiva was permitted to speak through a telephone to Henriquez, to pray for him and encourage him, and the pastor sent letters of encouragement down to the trapped men. He also shared the Gospel with their families, and one of the miners' wives accepted Jesus as Savior.

Also as he mingled around Camp Hope, Leiva witnessed to Chilean policemen and foreign press who had convened at the site, including a Japanese reporter.

Talking Bible bringing scripture to the Illiterate

Bible translators like Wycliffe have spent decades translating the scriptures into the written word of different languages all over the world. But what about people who don't have a written word - the illiterate, the blind, and peoples who never invented a written language? Enter the Talking Bible, a new digital Bible device which reads the Bible to its listener, keeps its place between uses, and is created to feel like a storyteller presenting scripture to a listener.
A Hindu village priest insisted that he, being spiritual leader in that village, should be the one to be responsible for their Talking Bible. He promised to call the people together to listen every day. The amazing thing that happened was that the priest himself began listening and became a believer along with almost the entire village. Three months later, when the local evangelist called to check up on them, the converted village priest pointed to the small village temple. There was a chain and a padlock on the door. The temple was closed. Instead, because of the power of God’s spoken Word, many people in that village were baptized and were worshipping together, praising God and trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul explained to us that faith comes by hearing and this new technology has the potential to bring faith to thousands of new people.

How did the Bible's chapters and verses come to be?

Have you ever wondered how the current system of chapter and verse in the Bible came to be? After all, it is unlikely that when Paul wrote his letters, he was thinking about it being reprinted in book form. Well, Biblegateway.com has up a useful brief history of bible verses for your reading pleasure!
The Old Testament has long been organized into sections and subsections; our modern chapter and verse divisions generally (but not always) correspond to the traditional Jewish organization of the text. While the Old and New Testaments have been roughly organized at least since the Bible canon was established, it wasn’t until 1,000 years later that something resembling our modern chapter and verse system was widely accepted.

The person credited with dividing the Bible into chapters is Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1207-1228. While Langton’s isn’t the only organizational scheme that was devised, it is his chapter breakdown that has survived.
Remember, while all scripture is God-breathed, the chapter and verse divisions are not. Don't be afraid to read your Bible, ignoring those divisions, and see if it brings you any new insights.

Study Tip: Where do you do your Bible Quizzing studying? In our age of Multitasking, it is common for people to try to study with the TV or radio on. Others try to do it in the main thoroughfare of the house, where parents are cleaning, siblings are talking on the phone, and pets are running by. This is not optimal for memory or concentration. Try finding a quiet corner of the house, and do your studying without music or video paying. Focus can make an incredible difference in your memory retention.

Hospitals return Bible to the Bedside

Some of you know that my mother recently had a short stay in the hospital. We were surprised to learn that, despite the hard work of the Gideons to place Bibles everywhere, Bridgeport Hospital no longer has Bibles at the bedside of every patient! We brought Mom her own Bible from home, so she had the Word of God at her side for comfort and encouragement. It turns out many hospitals have been banning the bedside placement of Bibles out of concern that they would be unable to disinfect the books between patients. But now, the tide appears to be turning on this practice, as many hospitals are revising their policies to allow patients access to the Good Book.
