Vocabulary in Luke 14

There are a few words in each chapter which may be new to you. This little feature may help you to get a better understanding of what you are reading.

There in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy. - Luke 14:2

Dropsy: An old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water.

In years gone by, a person might have been said to have dropsy. Today one would be more descriptive and specify the cause. Thus, the person might have edema due to congestive heart failure.

If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. - Luke 14:32

Delegation: A person or group of persons officially elected or appointed to represent another or others
