We read the Bible because it is God's Word. And thus has it been, through all of American history. In most cases, the bible was the one book guaranteed to be in every house, and something that every family kept handy... if only for when the preacher came by. It may also be the best place to find out the history of your own family. Families used to use Bibles as the place to track births, marriages, deaths, and other significant events in one's life.
