If you're interested in presenting, please tell the coaches tonight or contact us by March 1. There is no pressure, but it'd be great to see a few Trumbullites showing their stuff!

The First Bible on the Moon

The Bible has been all over the world - and missions organizations like Wycliffe Bible Translators are bringing it everywhere else. But did you know it has also been out of this world and to the moon? Well, it turns out NASA secretly carried it there, fairly recently.
[In] early 2006, Mitchell arranged for me to have one of the bibles that landed on the moon. And they were microfilm bibles, due to the size and weight restrictions on the Apollo aircraft. The (astronauts) could only carry 18 ounces in their personal preference kits, which were 4 by 6 inches. And on that microfilm was all 1,245 pages of the King James Bible...

The quest to land a bible on the moon was born out of the fire that took the lives of the Apollo 1 astronauts, Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Ed White. Ed White was a very all-American religious guy, and during Gemini 4 he carried in the left leg of his spacesuit a gold crucifix, a St. Christopher medal and the Star of David.

Before his death, he had told a reporter that if he got to the moon on Apollo 1 he planned to carry a bible with him. His death had a profound effect on Reverent Stout. And he vowed that he would see a bible landed on the moon in Ed White's name. The first microfilm bible went up on Apollo 12. Only, due to an error in stowage, it was stored in the command module and never landed on the moon. So with that, Reverend Stout got a larger group of bibles and asked the Apollo 13 crew to take it to the moon. And, as everyone knows, there was an onboard explosion on Apollo 13 and so they returned to earth with the bibles without ever landing.

Study Tip: Did you know that when you sleep, your mind continues to work on whatever you were thinking about last before you fell asleep? If you are working through an especially difficult passage of scripture, sometimes it can be helpful to study it and work with it right before bed. Then your subconscious can work on it as you sleep (warning, you may dream about quizzing!) and when you wake up, you may find the passage more deeply ingrained into your mind.

This simple commitment can change you from a useless quizzer to one who makes the difference between a win and loss for your team.

Using all things for Good

Most people forget, but the Gideons know that God can not be thwarted. Even attacks on Him server to further his plans. And to spread His Word further.
The more controversy there is over whether Waterloo Region public schools should be giving out Gideon Bibles, the more requests there are for the free copies, officials say.

Officials at Gideons International in Canada, an evangelical Christian group that has given away millions of Bibles worldwide, say that there has been a “considerable” upswing of requests this year and last, when the controversy was high and attracted media attention.

An estimated 800 to 1,000 copies a year are now being given away to Grade 5 students in Waterloo Region, said Gordon Balfour, chief business officer of the Guelph-based Gideons organization.

That’s about one student out of four that requests the free copy of Gideons’ Little Red Answer Book, which includes the New Testament, plus the Hebrew Bible books of Proverbs and Psalms.

Study Tip: Do read through the text of scripture and find at the end that you know barely more than you did at the beginning? Do you envy those who can read it once, and be able to quiz effectively? Different people learn in different ways. Some people can do it by simply reading, others by listening. But you may be a learner who needs to really engage the text. Consider taking notes as you read - note down really interesting sections, questions that the text raises, notable phrases, etc. At the end, you will have applied not only your eyes but all the parts of your brain, and the learning may very well be far more effective. Oh, and don't forget to call, e-mail, or speak to the coaches, your parents, or the pastors to get the answers to those questions you had.

HUMOR: Parking Etiquette

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. So he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 100 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES."

When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note. "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket, I'll lose my job. LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION."

Do you "exercise" your memory?

One key for being a successful quizzer is figuring out the best way for YOU to study in order to retain. But once you have figured that out, there is still more you can do in order to retain and remember what you have learned. A new study suggests the best thing we can do is to "exercise our memory" by taking a few minutes after studying to consciously try to remember what we just learned. Like a muscle, our brain works best when we exercise those pieces we want to keep strong.
One group engaged in elaborative study using concept maps while a second group practiced retrieval; they read the texts, then put them away and practiced freely recalling concepts from the text.
After an initial study period, both groups recalled about the same amount of information. But when the students returned to the lab a week later to assess their long-term learning, the group that studied by practicing retrieval showed a 50 percent improvement in long-term retention above the group that studied by creating concept maps.
