Question: FTV: Jesus said to his disciples:...
Answer: ...Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. (Luke 17:01-02)
Question: FTV: So watch yourselves...
Answer: ...If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him. (Luke 17:03-04)
Question: FTV: He replied, "If you have...
Answer: ...faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you. (Luke 17:06)
Question: FTV: Once, having been asked...
Answer: ...by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:20-21)
Question: FTV: For the Son of Man...
Answer: ...in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. (Luke 17:24-25)
Question: FTV: Whoever tries to keep his...
Answer: ...life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. (Luke 17:33)

Study Tip: For me, Midwinter was the event in my Quizzing career where it all started to click. I began to understand WHY I was quizzing, and it served as a jumping-off point to become a better quizzer. You can do the same thing. If you have not been one of our top quizzers to date, use what you have learned now to dedicate yourself to studying for the rest of the year. There is still time to learn enough chapters to be effective, and to use the coming review weeks to brush up your skills on past chapters. You can still be a key player for our team.

Midwinter Rules Reminders
During practice quizzes, we tend to relax things a bit to allow everyone to have fun. But it is important to remember that Midwinter is one of the two big Quiz Meets each year where every rule is followed to the letter. Here are some notes to keep in mind this weekend:
1. The only person who may talk during the question is the Quiz Master. The only person who may talk during the answer is the person whom the Quiz Master has called upon. Any other quizzer speaking or communicating in any way (sign language, mouthed words) will be assessed a FOUL.The rest of the rules you know. If you have any questions on the rules, please be sure to bring them on Wednesday and ask them of the coaches.
2. Only a Captain or the Quizzer who answered a question may CONTEST the Quiz Master's ruling. The Captain may then choose one other quizzer to confer with, before presenting the contest. Random quizzers on the pads can not contest.
3. No Bible or Scripture Portion may be open during a quiz. Not even in the audience or "bench". Once the quiz begins, it must be put away.
4. A Quizzer, once having jumped and been called upon, can not turn off his or her light, even by accident. Doing so may result in a FOUL.
5. You may contest only the results of a given question or ruling. You may not contest the question. Even if the question was poorly phrased, constructed, or read. The Quiz Master may choose to throw out a question, but a quizzer may not contest it.

Midwinter is next Saturday, and it is important that all quizzers are wearing their official Quiz Team t-shirt or hoodie for the event. (If you do not have one, and would like to buy one, please contact Coach Mark.) If you have not already, now is the time to get everything ready. Parents, Please take note.

REMINDER: Parents welcome at Midwinter Quiz
Midwinter is coming up in only week and a half. Most years, we see a few parents drive down to cheer us on, but we wanted to remind families this year that Midwinter is in Montgommery, NJ and thus only a few hours drive away. More parents and families may want to come on down and be the designated cheering section, since there are no costly overnight hotel stays required.

IMPORTANT: Annual Quizzing Fee is due for Midwinter
We try to keep the costs of quizzing as low as possible. We charge only for gas and food at the monthly quiz meets. But for the big 2 quizzes of the year a little extra is needed in order to cover trophies, hiring Quizmasters, etc. As in past years, this fee is due at Midwinter.
The cost for this year is $15 per quizzer.
This is an increase in cost from last year, but now also includes a lunch and snacks at Midwinter and Districts. The fee is required even if you are going to miss Midwinter or Districts.
If this cost is a critical issue for anyone, please contact the coaches ASAP. We do not want this to keep anyone from Midwinter.

Vocabulary in Luke 14
There are a few words in each chapter which may be new to you. This little feature may help you to get a better understanding of what you are reading.
There in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy. - Luke 14:2
Dropsy: An old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water.
In years gone by, a person might have been said to have dropsy. Today one would be more descriptive and specify the cause. Thus, the person might have edema due to congestive heart failure.
If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. - Luke 14:32
Delegation: A person or group of persons officially elected or appointed to represent another or others

President-Elect Barack Obama to be sworn in on Lincoln's Bible
A reminder of how central faith has been to the history of America is the fact that our leaders choose to be sworn into office while placing their hand on a Bible. For President-Elect Barack Obama, the perfect Bible to choose for this duty is one owned by Abraham Lincoln - another President from Illinois.
The Lincoln Bible is part of the rare book and special collections at the Library of Congress in Washington. Clark Evans heads one of the sections there. "There is a palpable connection between Mr. Lincoln the great emancipator and having this Bible used by our first African American president," he said.
The Bible was purchased for Lincoln's first inauguration in 1861 by a clerk of the US Supreme Court. The court's seal authenticates its historic use. Evans says the Bible is not usually exhibited, except on special occasions like this.

Rather than waiting for after homework, dinner, or whatever else you normally put before studying, consider setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier in the morning and spending that time reading thru that week's chapter. This can set the tone for your day, and give you a chance to apply the lessons of the chapter in your daily life.
