Fairfield County Bible Bee

We recently received notice that there will be a regional Bible Bee here in Fairfield County. This event will not have any cash prizes, but is a prerequisite if you are interested in competing at the NATIONAL Bible Bee in Washington DC.
The first nationwide bible bee is being held this year to encourage our youth to learn the Gospel and to be excited about their Christian faith.

It will provide a great opportunity for families to spend time together in preparation talking about what is most important: the Truth of Jesus Christ.

Signups are until April 30, and the event will be September 12. The location for all of southwestern CT is in Westport and there will be over 400 local competitions around the country.

The National Finalist event will be November 5-6 in Washington DC and there are prizes of $25,000 to $100,000 to be awarded, but everyone who participates and learns the Word of God recieves a blessing even greater.
For contact information, please see the attached image. Signups are ending April 30, so be sure to act quickly if you are interested.

This is NOT an official Quiz Team activity. Please note it is the same weekend as the Senior High Retreat, so parents and teens will have to choose one or the other.

Study Tip: As we read about the last week of Jesus life, we are ALSO heading towards Easter. As you read about the triumphal entry, the last supper, the trial, the crucifixion, and the resurrection, realize that we are learning about the very basis for our celebration of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. This might be a way to stay motivated as the end-of-the-year crunch begins at school.

Should a non-Christian read the Bible?

We know why it is important for a Christian to read the Bible, but what about non-Christians? One agnostic decided to try it out, and was surprised by what he learned.
While reading the Bible, I often felt as if I had finally lifted a veil from my eyes. I learned that I hadn't known the true nature of God's conflict with Job, which is the ur-text of all subsequent discussions of obedience and faith. I realized I was ignorant of the story of Ruth. I was unaware of the radical theology of Ecclesiastes, the source of so many of our ideas about the good life. I didn't know who Jezebel was, or why we loathe her, or why she is the painted lady, or even that she was married to Ahab.
Scripture says that God's word does not return to Him void. Reading the Bible is beneficial for everyone, especially anyone who wants to understand Western civilization.

The Bible and Sports

The Washington Post has up an interesting interview with Ritchie McKay, coach of basketball at Liberty University, and how his Christian faith has impacted his life and his coaching methods.
Do you feel that being a Christian helps you be a better coach?
Oh yeah, no question. If you're in coaching, you have a position that is one of influence. You get a chance to lead young people. I think for me, that's a privilege. So if I can invest in the life of or lives of our players, and do it without an agenda of just their performance, but actually be an example for them, then, boy, that's a very, very rewarding opportunity.

Do you feel that being a Christian has hurt you as a coach?
Never.
