If you want to listen to the chapter online, click here. (Uses the free RealPlayer.)
If you'd like to read a commentary on the chapter, click here. (Free website, Biblegateway.Com)
Study Tip: How many senses are you engaging when you study? For most of us, the more of our senses we use, the deeper what we study is moved into our memory. Try reading the chapter out loud (engaging eyes and ears). Try writing out the chapter by hand (engaging eyes and hands). Try associating parts of the chapter with pictures that you draw (engaging eyes in multiple ways). Experiment with different ways of embedding scripture into your memory.

George Washington's Bible comes to Boston
Every President has been sworn into office with their hand on a Bible. Now, the historic Bible that George Washington used for the first inauguration is going to be on display in the Bostona area for the first in decades.
The Bible upon which George Washington laid his hand and took his historic oath of office, making him the first president of the newly formed United States of America, will be on public display at the Newburyport Masonic Building, 31 Green St., from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Bible is an integral part of American history. While separation of Church and State is important to us, it is important to remember this separation did not mean weeding God completely out of public life. Government is a reflection of the People, and if the Bible is important to the People it can be important to our public gatherings.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Ellis Island after Quiz Meet
We have been teasing it for a few weeks, but it is now official. After the Quiz Meet, next Saturday (Sept 27) we will be traveling to Ellis Island for the afternoon! This historic site was the gateway to America for Immigrants for decades and holds thousands of stories of the American Dream. There will be NO Pizza Lunch this time around, but teens should plan to bring their own bag lunch instead. We will be taking the Ferry, so expect to go through security (NO pocket knives!) and to take a brief boat ride.
Costs: $6 for gas + $12 for the Ferry = $18. You may wish to bring some extra for souvenirs or snacks.
What to Bring: (In addition to your Luke scripture portion.) A BAG LUNCH (no large coolers will be allowed past Ferry security), a jacket (it is windy and cold on the ferry)
Cameras are also welcome for the trip, but the usual papparazi will be along to cover most of it.

Ballet Magnificat coming to Calvary
This may not seem quizzing-related, but a quiz team parent and a former quizzer are both involved with bringing a Bible-focussed ballet troupe to Calvary on Friday, September 26. This group uses the art of ballet to tell Bible stories and bible-themed stories for their audience. If you are a fan of dance, or interested in seeing something different, consider coming out and taking a look.

Translating the Bible INTO Hebrew?!
It is a common thing to hear about Wyliffe Bible Translators and others looking to publish an edition of the Bible in a new language, starting with the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. But how often do you hear about a plan to translate the Hebrew Bible into Hebrew? The idea is that modern Hebrew and ancient Hebrew are significantly different, and that modern students need a version which is closer to what they speak in Israel these days. I guess it is like trying to "translate" Shakespeare into modern English.
"The language of the Bible is a 'foreign language' for Israeli students, and there is a need to interpose easier language, so that teachers can have free time to delve deeper [into the material]," said Rafi Mozes (who decided to etch his name on the project for posterity and thus titled the book the Ram Bible, where "Ram" represents his initials in Hebrew). Avraham Ahuvia, who translated the work, added: "I was convinced [to put out the book] because we teachers translate the Bible orally in lessons for the students, who have a difficult time understanding the grand language."The real problem here is that the "translators" chose to change the meaning of key verses of scripture while making it more readable to moderns. It is often hard to do a translation without accidentally or purposely slanting the new version with your own ideas and preconceptions.

Study Tip: Having problems absorbing the text in such a way that you can get questions at practice? Consider getting your family or friends involved. Have them pick up a Bible and pick a verse from the chapter you are studying. Have them read the first half (or little bit) of the verse, and then you try to complete as much as you can. This gets you used to hearing the text the same way you will in practice.
Upcoming Events: Saturday, September 27 - Quiz Meet in Essex Fells
Also, let's not forget to pray for the widows and orphans of 9/11. It has been 7 years, but their lives will be forever changed by that day.

PRAYER REQUEST: Hurricane Gustav and the Gulf Coast
As you go about your Labor Day business, please take a moment to say a prayer for the residents of the Gulf Coast as they face Hurricane Gustav. Please be in prayer especially for the residents of New Orleans who are being evacuated after only really beginning to recover from Hurricane Katrina.
