Spy Report: "Service project"

According to multiple encrypted transmissions, the youth group will be spending the afternoon on a service project putting together backpacks for kids in the Congo. Service projects have become a big part of Nationals in recent years, and are a way for the teens to give back to the local community and to the world.

Another spy has just shot this over the teletype:  Not only did Trumbull take First Place, but Cresskill took Third Place!  Congratulations to our neighbors to the south!  The East Coast has represented itself well this year.

Remember to keep praying for safety, fun, and spiritual awakening for the students in Columbus, Ohio. Events like this can easily lead to revivals both in the town where they take place, and all the way back home. SPY REPORT ALERT: TRUMBULL WINS FIRST PLACE AT NATIONALS!!!

Our intrepid spy sent over an URGENT coded message, after decoding we have learned that TRUMBULL HAS WON FIRST PLACE AT NATIONALS for the Upper Division! They went UNDEFEATED through all of their quizzes, and competed against the champions from the last Challenge Conference twice!

Congratulations to each and every quizzer who made this possible, to each and every parent who supported the team, and to our Lord for giving us His Word to treasure up in our hearts!

Nationals Updates? We have spies!!!

Odds are if you're reading this blog today, you're not going to Nationals. You're probably a parent or quizzer who stayed home and who is praying for those who are going to be in Columbus, Ohio for the next few days. If so, what are the best ways to stay up-to-date?

• Keep your eyes here, or our twitter stream. We have a number of "spies" infiltrated and ready to spill the beans!
• Watch the Challenge 2010 blog which also has general information about speakers and opportunities
• Check out the Challenge 2010 Facebook page if you happen to be on that social networking site
• If you want to get a feel for what the students are doing, check out the first-timer's guide (PDF) which is a kind of orientation for newcomers.

We'll do our best to keep piping spy info to everyone. Be sure to be in prayer for the students and leaders. Please pray especially for traveling mercies, as there have been few Nationals Trips of this distance where we have not seen at least one bus breakdown!

Preparing for Nationals - Knowing the Rules

Tomorrow is the day the team leaves for Nationals. As you're doing your last-minute prep, here are a few rules to keep in mind which we do not usually emphasize during the year:

• Remember your team shirt. Everyone is expected to be wearing one. If you do not have one, and have not yet made arrangements with Coach Jim, now would be a good time to give him a call.
• No shorts or flip flops. Remember, quizzing clothes should be "respectful." This typically is interpreted to mean no shorts, no flip flops. And remember, guys must remove their hats during prayer.
• No bibles may be open during the quiz. This INCLUDES those in the audience. Keep the scripture portions closed during the quizzes.
• Remember, if you want to Contest, only the Captain or the person answering the question may initiate a Contest. If you're not one of those two and think a Contest should be offered, give your Captain the stink eye! (This is why it is important to always have a designated Team Captain on the pads.)
• Every two fouls results in a loss of 10 points. The first one is "free".
• If you are not sure whether or not to Contest, remember there is no penalty for requesting to "confer". If you're the Captain or the one answering the question, speak up right away and request to "confer" and this will buy you an extra 30 seconds to consider your position.
• Remember, 4 seats with a right answer scores 10 points, and 5 seats with a correct answer scores 20. Team Bonuses can make the difference between a win and a loss in a close quiz.

And don't forget to have fun. :-) You'll be meeting teens from all over the country who love scripture just as much as you.

Nationals is a great time of togetherness, worship time, learning, and excitement. The days will fly by once you're there, but you have a long drive out there where the hours might crawl by. So, why not use this as a time to sharpen your skills for Quizzing? Here are some resources that you may wish to print out for your carry-on (password is "quizpad" for all of these).

Study Tip: When Super K was visiting on Wednesday, did you notice how he scored points for his team? Despite not having studied the material for 8 years, he made a difference by knowing what he knew and being patient waiting for it. Quizzing is about speed and confidence, but it is also about strategy. Be sure to examine yourself before Nationals, and figure out what parts of the books you know best. Then practice patience, waiting for the questions you know and jumping quickly when they come around.

Study Tip: This time of year is INCREDIBLY busy as we end out one school year (for some one school career) and prepare for a busy summer. It is easy to let the Bible get squeezed out by the busyness of life. But the fact is that if you let it go now, you are setting a pattern for your whole life. Be sure to set aside some time every day. If you can't study all the material for next week each day, set aside time to ready thru one chapter a day and go back and forth. If you don't have time for that, consider reviewing 1/2 a chapter each morning or evening. If even that is impossible, put the CDs that Mr. Sarris made for us in the car, or your room CD player or MP3 player, and let it play while you work. We don't study the Bible because we like to win - we study because it the most important book we will ever read.

Connecticut wrestles with the Separation of Church and State

Most of the interesting Church/State cases happen in other states, it seems. But now, Connecticut has its own controversy to work through. The city of Enfield had hoped to hold its graduation on the grounds of a nearby church, but the courts have forbidden this on Constitutional grounds.

Enfield school officials voted 5-4 Thursday night against appealing a federal judge's temporary injunction that stopped plans for the town's two high school graduations inside The First Cathedral in Bloomfield.

Vincent McCarthy, a lawyer representing the school district, says he's going to seek a jury trial and plans to fight to allow graduations at the church in the future.

A man was walking through a forest pondering life. He walked, pondered, walked, and pondered. He felt very close to nature and even close to God. He felt so close to God that he felt if he spoke God would listen. So he asked, "God, are you listening?"

And God replied, "Yes my son, I am here."

The man stopped and pondered some more.

He looked towards the sky and said, "God, what is a million years to you?"

God replied, "Well my son, a second to me is like a million years to you."
